The 8th Rank: a tactical roguelike game with combo-based combat taking place in the corrupted mythos of chess.

Fight waves of enemies by queueing up chains of unique abilities. By seeing exactly what your enemies are going to do, you can unleash devastating combos to clear the room before they can react.

The starting moves are inspired by the familiar chess pieces, but every run will reveal new rewards and upgrades. Build your deck with over 30 strategic and brutal moves, including fan favorites like shotgun, unicorn leap, and en passant.

The bosses are the corrupted chess pieces themselves, each with a deadly evolved version of their usual routine.

Primarily being developed for Steam and portrait-mode mobile.

The 8th Rank is the work of several months of effort as a solo developer. It's still early days, so all feedback is appreciated! The game currently consists of several admittedly difficult levels interspersed with card rewards, followed by the first boss: The Knight.

The music is original, written and produced by me: The 8th Rank (title theme) and Momentum (first level theme).

AI disclosure: Some sprites were AI generated for the sake of rapid prototyping, but these will be replaced with hand-drawn art and animations in the coming months!
